Mission: Create a culture of community engagement promoting community/CHEqI partnerships that enrich teaching, learning, research, address critical social issues, and contribute to the public good in the Greater Lafayette area.

Goals for CHEqI Community Engagement:

  • Strategically engage with our community in order to provide service in all areas within the Social Determinants of Health
  • Find new opportunities to partner with other organizations in order to serve them through Community Intern positions

LTHC Internship: The Purdue University Center for Health Equity and Innovation is excited to offer the CHEqI Community Internship in partnership with Lafayette Transitional Housing Center (LTHC).  LTHC is a housing center that serves individuals experiencing homelessness.  This internship is an 8-10 hour/week commitment working in person at LTHC (unpaid).  Our interns have been able to participate in many unique opportunities including implementing tobacco cessation in the shelter, planning educational health sessions with guest speakers about harm reduction, first aid/foot care, and dental care, and working on the electronic health record to fit the needs of LTHC.  This internship will provide extremely valuable insight on working with vulnerable populations and expand your professional and leadership skills.

Valley Oaks Internship: The Purdue University Center for Health Equity and Innovation (CHEqI) is partnering with Valley Oaks Health in order to offer a Community-Based Internship.  Valley Oaks Health is committed to providing high quality mental health and addiction services to the citizens of Tippecanoe and eight surrounding counties.  With such a wide reach, Valley Oaks Health has the goal of expanding their online HealthHub - a place that provides expert advice, helpful information, and practical tips for taking care of your mental health.  CHEqI/Valley Oaks Community Interns get the opportunity to develop their strategic marketing and health communication skills by aiding in the growth of HealthHub.  Additional roles could include creating educational public health presentations for leadership teams and exploring areas for connection with other community organizations.  This internship is an 8-10 hour/week virtual commitment with Valley Oaks (unpaid). It will provide students with valuable experience in public health education and expand their professional and leadership skills.

Public Health Internship: The Purdue University Center for Health Equity and Innovation (CHEqI) created an internship for Public Health students. This internship allowed students to analyze social determinants of health and apply skills learned into public health issues.
